Beautiful Italian place across from Grand Central Market also listed in LA Times' Top 10 Italian Restaurants with the likes of Bestia. Having been to both Bestia and now here, I have to compare the two in price and portion, which Maccheroni wins in both categories. First, the most pressing topic: the wait. Around 1 PM on Saturday the Yelp app said the waitlist was closed. In my mind I thought this meant that the waitlist was already stupid long and I shouldn't take my chances for lunch or dinner. My friend and I agreed on showing up around 4:30 PM with plans to roam around Grand Central but to our surprise, there were many open tables inside and outside by the time we arrived. Around 6 PM when we were finished, however, the place was full and the waitlist was growing. Started off my meal with an antipasti charcuterie plate. The grilled bread can also be enjoyed with the beautiful green/gold fruity olive oil and balsamic vinegar that's left on the table. After halfway through the plate, my black and white pasta--recommended to me heralded over the gnocchi--came out along with my friends' wild boar papardelle. I've had another boar papardelle back home in DC that comes with less, but tougher shredded boar. Maccheroni's was more of a soft, ground texture which cling to the papardelle much better than the aforementioned. The taste of some sherry or wine really shined through as well. My black and white pasta was also delicious, squid ink pasta not overwhelmingly bitter and with the right amount of cream sauce and mushrooms. No dessert for this one, ended my dinner on a great note as is. Cute place to take someone on a date especially because they have outdoor seating. This place has a variety of pastas for a reasonable price. Everything was around 20$ or less My favorite was the agnolotti with veal in green sauce. The sauce was so good and flavorful but it unfortunately masked the taste of the osso bucco. The sauce just won me over by itself. I also liked the bigoli Della Nona which is a thick cut spaghetti with sausage. The noodles were al dente and came with a generous amount of meat. My friends also said it reminded them of udon. We also ordered the black and white pasta which was just okay to me The sauce was creamy but had this nutty flavor to it which I didn't enjoy The waiter recommended us to get the chefs special which was pasta with tripe. If you don't like tripe don't get this pasta. I enjoyed it but the pasta did taste gamey and it also reminded me of the taste of the ricotta in Chad lasagna but the shape of the pasta was really fun. This was also the least favorite of our table. I don't always praise pasta. Pasta is pasta. There's tomato sauce and cheese. You can't go wrong with a dish like that at any restaurant. Maccheroni, however, stood out. The portion sizing, to the burrata, to the creamy sauce.... amazing! Our friends who live in Downtown LA took us to this little restaurant. We made last minute reservations for around 8:30pm. Heads up, the restaurant is a little snotty when it comes to calling in to make reservations. They make you go onto Yelp to reserve a spot. Not only Marxian are they snotty over the phone, they aren't the most polite in person either. Once our orders were brought over, no one ever checked up on us. Aside from that, I was obsessed with my dish. I ordered the Rigatoni Pom'Amore. Yum! Not sure if the rigatoni was made in-house, but supposedly a lot of their pastas are. It was delicious nonetheless.
