this doesn?t sound like the situation op?s friend?s dog is in. if he goes back in the crate at 8 and is there all night, has a little break in the morning and again is there until 6 pm, 20 hours isn?t that much of a stretch. depending on the dog?s size/breed/age etc he could be painfully holding his pee and for that long. even if it?s not quite 20 hours, it?s cruel to keep a dog crated anywhere close to that long. and by the way the friend talks about it (complaining about it chewing things up/peeing/whining etc and the answer is just to go in the crate) it?s clear that this is a bad situation and op should call someone. my dog is crated about 8-9 hrs a day during the week. he is not a chewer nor has he had many accidents in the house at all, even as a puppy, but i keep him crated because he was crate trained at a young age and he absolutely loves
