Yeah I think raised beds would work really well in that corner of your yard. The soil there gets good afternoon sun and drains quickly after rain. You might want to add compost mix before planting anything though. I found that tomatoes and peppers did really well last season with just basic care. Basil planted nearby helped keep pests away naturally. You can start seeds indoors about six weeks before the last frost date for your zone.
That timing usually works well for getting strong transplants ready by spring.

We should set up the tables along the side of the park near the shade trees so food stays cooler longer. Everyone I talked to said they will bring a dish to share. I will make sure we have enough plates and utensils this time. The playground nearby works great for kids while adults visit. We might need to ask a few more neighbors to help with setup and cleanup though.
I think we can manage the whole thing in about two hours if we start by mid morning.
